Molycorp is renowned internationally for producing specialized mining products such as frothers, collectors, and grinding balls. The Kamloops facility, one of multiple locations, employs approximately 100 people.
The initial requirements were to fill both Plant Manager and Plant Superintendent positions. However, the client decided to promote internally for the superintendent role, leaving us with the key task of finding a qualified Plant Manager. The client, having recently transitioned from a family-owned to a mid-size organization, sought a candidate capable of leading the facility through this transformation.
The primary focus for Senior Recruiter Alessia Pagliaroli was on candidates with substantial plant management experience, ideally with 10-15 years or more, and a background in overseeing larger teams. The position required managing eight direct reports in a unionized facility, necessitating experience with union negotiations. The search initially spanned across BC, Alberta, and eventually extended to broader locations, with an emphasis on senior candidates with experience in the mining or industrial tool manufacturing sectors.
Given the potential challenge of relocating candidates to Kamloops, Molycorp recognized the need for a competitive compensation package. The offered salary ranged between $140,000 to $165,000, accompanied by a 22.5% bonus. This attractive package aimed to entice candidates and alleviate concerns about the location. The strategic approach also involved emphasizing the company culture and the ongoing transition from a family-owned to a larger organization, emphasizing collaboration, support, and an open-minded approach to process improvement.
Our success in filling the Molycorp Plant Manager position showcased adaptability, a strategic approach to location challenges, and an understanding of the client’s organizational needs.
